Claude CoWork
Claude working on your files in the background instead of waiting for prompts.
CoWork is a mode inside the Claude desktop app where the assistant works on folders you grant it, runs scheduled tasks and hands back finished output. The distinction from chat is that the unit of work is a task with a deliverable rather than a turn in a conversation. It is included on paid Claude plans rather than sold separately.
The useful framing is that this is not a coding tool that happens to have a team feature — it is aimed at work that several people hand back and forth, where the agent is a participant rather than a personal assistant. That makes the comparison set different from everything else in this category: you are weighing it against how your team already coordinates, not against another CLI. Price it per seat and against that workflow, because that is where it either earns its place or does not.
Our take
Worth trying if you already pay for Claude, since it costs nothing extra — and that is genuinely the strongest thing about it. The interesting shift is that work happens against files rather than in a chat log, which suits recurring document tasks better than conversation does. The caution is the same one that applies to any tool granted folder access: scope the folders narrowly and check the output, because background work is by definition work you were not watching.

Best for
- Recurring document and spreadsheet work with a clear deliverable
- People already paying for Claude who want more than chat
- Tasks where the input is a folder rather than a pasted block of text
Limitations
- Requires granting access to real folders on your machine
- Desktop app only; not a web workflow
- Background output still needs review before it is used
When to pick something else
- Environments where granting an app folder access is not permitted
- One-off questions, where plain chat is faster
- Anyone unwilling to review work produced while they were not watching
Key features
- Works on local folders you explicitly grant
- Scheduled and background task execution
- Connectors to external services
