Pair-specific comparison

Claude vs Gemini

A decision-first comparison built around the workflow, constraint or switching cost that actually separates these products.

The decision boundary

So which one

Two different bets. Claude is a bet on the quality of long-form reading and writing: put a lot of text in, get careful reasoning and prose that does not read as generated. Gemini is a bet on integration: it is worth most when it can see your mail, your documents and your calendar without you assembling them. Neither wins in the abstract. If you are choosing for document work, Claude. If you are choosing for a team already living in Google Workspace, Gemini, and the integration will matter more than any capability gap.

Best fit
  • Long documents read and reasoned about in one pass
  • Writing and editing where tone and specificity matter
  • Teams already working inside Google Workspace
  • Questions about your own mail, documents and calendar
Strongest capabilities
  • Long context window handles book-length input in one pass
  • Projects feature keeps reference documents across conversations
  • Grounded in live Google Search results
  • Reads Gmail, Drive and Calendar with permission
Main trade-off
  • Fewer built-in extras than the broadest all-in-one assistants
  • Much of the value evaporates outside the Google ecosystem
Avoid when
  • Wanting image generation and every other modality in one subscription
  • Organisations standardised on Microsoft or on nothing in particular

Choose by workflow

Choose Claude if

  • Long documents read and reasoned about in one pass
  • Writing and editing where tone and specificity matter
  • Analysis where you want the reasoning shown rather than a bare answer

Strongest on long documents and on writing that has to sound like a person wrote it. The large context window is the practical differentiator — you can put a whole contract, a long transcript or several files in at once and ask about them together, which changes what kinds of work are possible rather than just making them faster. Less of an all-in-one than its main competitor.

Choose Gemini if

  • Teams already working inside Google Workspace
  • Questions about your own mail, documents and calendar
  • Tasks that benefit from current information rather than training data

Its real argument is not the model in isolation but where it sits: inside Gmail, Docs and the rest of Workspace, with access to what is already there. If your working day happens in those tools, that proximity is worth more than a few benchmark points. If it does not, the case is much weaker and comes down to ordinary model comparison.

When to skip each one

Skip Claude if

  • Wanting image generation and every other modality in one subscription
  • Very short factual lookups, where a search-based tool answers faster

Skip Gemini if

  • Organisations standardised on Microsoft or on nothing in particular
  • Anyone unwilling to connect an assistant to their inbox

Known limitations

Claude

  • Fewer built-in extras than the broadest all-in-one assistants
  • Long-context work consumes quota quickly on metered plans
  • Still needs fact-checking on names, dates and figures

Gemini

  • Much of the value evaporates outside the Google ecosystem
  • Model naming and plan tiers make it hard to know what you are actually getting
  • Granting access to your mail and documents is a decision worth making deliberately
